Twilight Series in review

Twilight: The Good and The Bad

I admit I've read the Twilight series...and since all of you have too I felt like I could write a review and solicit your feedback as well. I want to know what you think? Do you agree or disagree with me?

First and foremost I admit that the any dislike for Twilight is jealousy. If we hate what is most similar to us then convict me. Ms. Meyers and I have some similarities.

  • We are both active Mormons.
  • We both graduated from Utah Universities.
  • We've both read a lot of classics.

Based on her website our high school lives sound similar as well. We both spent Friday and Saturday night reading rather than dating. Prom? I've got to finish Enders Game!

Differences

  • Stephanie Meyers is making MILLIONS.
  • I'm living on a very tight budget.

So here is what really bothers me. Stephanie Meyers is obviously an intelligent person. She has expressed a love for classics over and over again in her novels, yet SHE DIDN'T WRITE ONE. Was Twilight an attempt to be the new Bram Stoker (Dracula) and then settle for a Dime novel when the money kept rolling in? Did she think of Faust when she depicted Edwards frustration at being damned? Did she think of Romeo and Juliet when she depicted young love?

Bella is no Scout - To Kill a Mocking Bird. Edward is no Mr. Darcy - Pride and Prejudice. Her characters lack both depth and depiction. Her dialog is indeed, more reminiscent of a move script than a novel.

Yes everyone is a critic now a day, and yes I am mostly just jealous that I didn't beat her to the punch and write candy vampire story and make millions. MILLIONS! (sigh)

Sigh. At least I haven't sold out. Meaning: I'm still in the club of pseudo intellectual critics intelligent enough to recognize greatness but too snobby to write anything less than a classic.

All that being said I'm hold number 45 on her new novel "Eclipse." I think that makes me a closet fan.

And despite my jealousy I"m happy for her. Stephanie sounds like a great gal and I"m glad that she could make it. Infact props to any author who can make money in such a tough market. If she were my sister or friend I'd be proud of peaches.

I'm glad you liked Twilight. I didn't care for it myself, but points to Mrs. Meyers for writing a clean teen vampire book.

I loved the whole series, and I can't wait until the 4th book comes out. I thought it was a very entertaining and easy read. It definently wasn't thought provoking, but I don't think that was what she was going for. I think she was going for just entertainment, and that is what she got.

I'm also a teacher, and read the series after my students and some other teachers went gaga.

Feh.

Very poorly written.

Not enough plot to fill one good novel, never mind three.

The fantasy romance is a complete turn-off. So much gazing into each other's eyes... so much pining. Ugh.

The fact that the heroine desperately longs to GIVE UP HER ENTIRE IDENTITY to be with her man disturbs me more than I can say.

This is essentially a Harlequin romance written for teenage girls, with a vampire thrown in to lure in the fantasy/science fiction crowd.
