Biking Oregon summer of 2009

Summer Vacation.

Spencer and I wanted to do something to enjoy the summer. Last summer I left him for 6 weeks and went to play in Greece. This summer no Mediterranean vacations for me! I want to really spend some quality time together.

Quality time for means VACATION!!!

For our epic 2009 summer vacation the Stein-mann family (party of 2) has decided to bike along the Oregon coast.

Yes that is right! CYCLING all along the coast. I'm so excited! The only thing is I'm not a biker. I. am. not. a. biker! I ran a few marathons in what feels like was another life but now I'm mostly sedentary and can't fit into my skinny clothes. I've got roughly 2 months to get some miles into my legs and hopefully that will put me back into most of my wardrobe too.

It seems very ambitious but I am always up for an adventure and it will give me some motivation to train.

The training started to day and included biking 1 mile up city creek canyon (my tush hurts like h#%1!) and buying a book from Barnes & Nobel called biking Oregon.

Wish me luck and if you are from Oregon please pass along some advice!

Oregon here I come.

Of course you know I'm not from Oregon, but Seaside is one of my FAVORITE places in the US! I'm jealous! There is some incredible hiking around Cannon Beach, too. Have fun!

I'm from Oregon and actually returned yesterday from my latest visit to the homeland. I LOVE Oregon and am so excited for you. Just remeber you're biking the coast, so you'll have very foggy mornings, but it can get pretty warm as the day rolls on. Despite common misconceptions, Oregon does not get a ton of rain in the summer. It'll be beautiful. You shouldn't have a lot of traffic on the roads either. Should be ideal conditions for your ride.

Dear Anonymous

Thanks for the tips! Foggy mornings I'll remember that. I'm also glad to hear that they don't have a ton of rain in the summer.

Thanks for your comment. I'm so excited!

Very cool, Joanie, very cool. Cali and I loved our Pittsburgh to DC bike trip last summer.

Any details yet? How many miles are you planning on covering a day? Motels? Camping? Do you have a bike? Keep us updated!

When Dave and I decided to bike to St. George from Salt Lake, it was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. I would LOVE to do more biking......one day. I think it is awesome you will be doing it in Oregon. So beautiful. Dave's brother lives there and we have visited a few times. Good luck training!

I think you know Sister Cragun, right? She's from Oregon. Sadly, she lives in Nevada now. But she could give you tips. When I was in Oregon in 2001 it was so beautiful, you'll love it! Und "Hut ab" vor eurer Tour. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich das durchhalten würde.

That's awesome. Although I have to say that I have a completely different idea of what a vacation is. My version involves lying on a beach somewhere, not riding my tail off all day! At this point, though I'm just jealous that you get to take one. :)

That sounds like so much fun! :) I went with my dad on a 4 day bike trek through Moab Utah-that was intense-I can't imagine going along the whole oregon coast! :) Good Luck! We live right on the oregon border, so if you are driving through here (on your way to the coast) you should stop and say hi! I am sure you will be driving through here actually-it is really one of the only ways to get over there... anyway, if you want to then just get in touch with me sometime! :)

Now Joan, I'm not from Oregon, but Washington is pretty darn close AND just Monday my friend was telling me about her family biking trip down the OR coast. Now, how about that! I'll ask her for tips. I've only ever stayed at beach houses there, but I love the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach is probably my favorite. For some reason it seems to attract those of us up north. We'll be in Lincoln City the week after the 4th of July if you need a beach house to crash at! I'm serious!
p.s. I love that these are comments from "other blog junkies." Ain't it the truth.
